Walking into Balance MMA for the first time was an unexpected homecoming for me. Over the years I’ve trained and taught at many gyms and I’ve developed good relationships with many of the students as well as instructors from those gyms. With that being said, I was still stunned by the amount of warmth I enjoyed from the instructors and students at Balance.

If I had to sum up my impression of Balance in ten words or less I would say, “Very laid back, sans politics, lots of laughter.” Nevertheless underneath that relaxed atmosphere, real work is taking place, with an intensity befitting a gym with the lineage of Carlson Gracie.  No matter which style of martial arts you’re here for, the expectation is the same for everyone; be consistent, help your fellow students, and hone your technique. There is a lot to live up to, and I’m looking forward to bringing my years of experience as a fighter and a coach.

The style of training I was brought up on is based on hard work, with a strong emphasis on clean technique, power, and conditioning.  Over the next six months I look forward to building a team of competent practitioners who posses an ingrained understanding of Muay Thai fundamentals.

Advice for new students: Take your time.  Ask lots of questions.  Get lost in the beauty of your technique, because function follows form.  And a message to all of my team mates: I look forward to the months ahead; more importantly I look forward to growing together.

Train hard and I’ll see you all at the gym.
